Sleeve Notes: Apollonia on fabric 70
The groove heavy house of Apollonia's fabric 70, which dropped last month, hit our sweet spot from the moment we first heard it and continues to do each time we revist the impressive nature of its production. Apollonia's output is ardently anticipated by many for their ability to mix real nostalgic 90's basement house music with new captivating sounds of the Parisan underground, expressing a long standing love for music that stands up to the test of time. On Saturday, 20th July we celebrate Apollonia's seamless unity and expertise behind the decks and the launch of fabric 70 where the trio of DJs Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky will reign on the Martin Audio rig, all night long. Read on as the boys handpick some of the influences and inspirations behind fabric 70 that has become the perfect soundtrack to our long summer days.
Nail – I’ve Been There
We used to play this track back in the Batofar days in Paris, when the three of us first discovered our shared passion for music at the Kwality after hours where Dan was the resident DJ. It’s one of those vinyl that is never far from your record bag, really standing the test of time. It’s a beautiful vocal and a good feeling when you think this is one of the early tracks we enjoyed together at the beginning of our journey, and continue to do so more than a decade later. Including it in the compilation no doubt we’ll be introducing a younger generation for the first time to a classic, and it’s great to see Nail creep back on the scene this year. In fact he’s joined us at Off Sonar, playing our agency party Lola ED vs Half Baked.
Apollonia – Trinidad
Back in February we had just gone into the studio in Berlin to start to work on the debut Apollonia EP when we got the call from fabric for the compilation. Apart from a resounding yes(!) it couldn’t have been more perfect timing as we are never normally all together in the studio like this. From then on it was 6 weeks lock down to get both the EP and compilation done. As we wanted the compilation to show who we are and what we do, it made sense to include some of our newest material in the mix. The result was a 2 track EP - ‘Trinidad’ and ‘Visa Americain’, both featured exclusively first on fabric 70.
Funk E – Masa de Fatza
Funk E is one of our favourite up and coming producers. Originally from Romania, he became known as a resident DJ for Zoo Project in Ibiza. He’s a genius of sampling and editing. We love this new track from him – too many good things to mention!
Callisto – Need Ur Love (Stalagmite Mix)
Another classic from our early days together in Paris so we were sad to hear that Callisto had passed away at the beginning of the year. We wanted to include ‘Need Ur Love’ as a tribute to him and it was the perfect way to end the compilation. Not an easy one to license but we got there in the end, and now actually have plans to repress it on Apollonia towards the end of the summer.
