Introducing: The Stallions

With a myspace biography that reads: “Lovefingers and Lee Douglas traveled the world searching for the perfect wave, then they got bored and learned to ride horses,” you might be correct in assuming that The Stallions project is a fun thing, less serious, more party. Sepeately Lovefingers runs the ESP Institute label and Lee Douglas is an integreal part of the NYC based Rong Music disco collective, and has releases on DFA with his TBD project, but together, as the name well suggests, this is a duo of powerful selectors, tearing into each other’s selections with gusto and vigour. Delivering the closing statement in our global, disco related interview and mix swap, Lee Douglas and Lovefingers - collectively known as The Stallions - have been quizzed by the Lasermagnetic magnates, with both parties answering the call and here providing a mix for your digestion. Download: The Stallions - fabric Promo Mix What inspires/excites you? What lets you down or pisses you off? We get inspired by primitive things like lowest forms of music, feet stomping, grunting and chanting. What are the Stallions working on in studio and what releases have you got coming up? We're working on a single for our album that's also in the works, but it’s a slow process; mostly we've been caught up with remixes recently. To name a few: Phenomenal Handclap Band, Ariel Pink, Phil Manzanera, The Canyons, The Backwoods... What’s your favorite piece of kit to work with in the studio? I guess the organ or the bass guitar, two things that we really lay down our vibe with... at least for now. Andrew, tell us a little how the ESP label came about and how is it all going? ESP came about because it just had to. I felt there was a need for new things out there, same mission as most labels I suppose. I just have my own idea of what I want to hear and am very happy to cross pollinate various music to create a new vibe... I guess that’s the reason for most things we do: to create our own vibes. Any particular labels, producers that excite you at the moment? All the Pampa stuff from DJ Koze, Ene records from Tokyo, all our good friends involved with Golf Channel, all the ESP Institute crew and of course our brother, Justin Vandervolgen. DJing wise what’s been good lately and why? We just had an amazing time in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Stallions and TBD collectively massacred the best dancefloors over there. Our good friend and amazing artist Eduardo Sarabia opened a new bar/club called Barrio Chino and while we weren't eating the tacos we were dropping the jams all night. Are you looking forward to playing at fabric? Of course! Been wanting to play with you guys at fabric for ages, and we've got some Halloween pranks up our sleeves! Ok so, we’re visiting LA. What food joints must we try and what? Are you sure you want to open the can of worms that is the Lovefingers LA food list? MEXICAN: Loteria (in the farmers market, you should check that out anyway) - $$ KOREAN:Chosun Galbi (sit outside, one of the best Korean BBQ in LA, rad) - $$$ JAPANESE: Matsuhisa (famous chef Nobu original spot, expensive, but if you wanna splurge, very LA) - $$$$ VIETNAMESE: Viet Soy (small place, makes aweseome homeade infused soymilks, good banh mi) http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/46318866/los_angeles_ca/viet_soy_cafe.html ITALO: Farfalla (used to eat here once a week, simply rad) - $$ FRENCHY: Cafe Stella (proposed to my wife here, romantic as hell, my favorite) - $$$ LA LUNCH: Joan's On 3rd (gourmet deli style, always packed, super LA vibe) - $$ GHETTO CLASSIX: In'n'Out (don't fuck around, probably just grab a burger straight out of the airport, THE best) - $ Ok so, you are preparing for the bullfighting season at a matador training camp. You are allowed to take 5 pieces of vinyl with you. What do you take? Bolero, Mike Theodore Orchestra, Richie Havens, Led Zeppelin 4, and any (well produced) Erik Satie. Catch The Stallions vs. Lasermagnetic in Room 3 this Halloween Saturday.
