Introducing: Neoteric & his FABRICLIVE promo mix
With an ear for talent, a notably flawless skill for mixing vinyl, and one of the deepest – and certainly most diverse – record bags, Neoteric has come to be regarded as a key player in the Canadian underground music scene. After his recent tour with Crookers, Neoteric joins the duo in our main room this October 7th, alongside the legendary Zinc, Style of Eye and Marc Roberts.
You’re arguably one of the most diverse DJs to come out of Canada. Sharing stages with everyone from Raekwon to The XX. Tell us about your most memorable set...
Probably Oct 4th, 2008. I was in LA for some gigs and it was election night. As I got ready for the club, I watched Obama announce he was the next President, you could hear the city explode with cheers, horns honking and the like. I was playing at Cinespace for Dim Mak Tuesdays, and I got there early. The place was RAMMED, everyone had the highest of spirits and my dude Dan Oh was playing Young Jeezy's 'My President is Black,' pulling it back as the entire club sang along. The rest of the night was insane; so many homies were in town. The whole Ed Banger crew, Crookers, MSTRKRFT – seemed like everyone in that scene at the time was there. Then a friend tapped me on the shoulder and said "Yo, don't look now but Thomas from Daft Punk is watching you play". Yeah, won't ever forget that night!
You’re the A&R for Switch’s Dubsided imprint and are renowned for your skills as a selector. Who have you got your eyes on at the moment? Any up and comers we should be looking out for?
So many talents! My dude Danny Daze is making incredible music right now, he just played fabric last week. These young bucks from Montreal called Botnek are really killin’ it, and it seems a set doesn’t go by where I don’t play a few songs from Seattle's Astronomar. Also check out Gingy & Bordello, Mom & Dad, Panton, Maxxi Soundsystem, Eats Everything, DJ Dodger Stadium, and of course, Wax Motif.
Tell us about The White Light Mixes series. When and why was it started?
We started the series (myself and Matty C) because I had a weekly party in Whistler, BC, which was 90 minutes outside of Vancouver. After 5 hours in the club, and a long drive at 3am, we wanted to mellow out. The series is all about driving in the dark, zoning out, moments of introspection. Total mood pieces, no club music, just bliss. We've had some truly amazing talents contribute to the series, with even more on the way.
How has touring with Crookers been? What have been your highlights?
It’s been great, albeit a bit unreal. The crowds are wild! They enjoy having me set the table and not bang it out too wild beforehand. Also, since I'm new to the European scene, it’s a nice to experience different cities and clubs and meet everyone. I'm incredibly grateful they are happy to have me along for the ride!
You’re playing alongside Crookers at fabric this October 7th. Who are you looking forward to seeing on the night?
Honestly, everyone. All the rooms are stacked! I’m excited to check out Popof, Stopmakingme, Roska and Jamie George, that’s if I can sneak away from the madness in Room One. Style of Eye should be mad, and of course the legend, Zinc!
What can we look forward to from your set?
A whole bunch of new and exclusive stuff, some cheeky bootlegs, and a mixed bag of a few genres and styles, all brought together in a fast moving, exciting way. Well, I hope at least. The mix kind of covers a lot of bases. Can't wait for Oct 7th! Big up fabric, it’s truly, truly an immense honor!
