Introducing: BirdsMakingMachine
It’s not long before burgeoning collective, Birdsmakingmachine take to our third floor to present the breadth of their label to us for the very first time. The imprint was only forged in 2011 and, as BMM’s Alejandro Ross lays out in our interview below, the label is a true showing of a vision that focuses on and prioritises the quality of releases above the identity of the artists. It’s this factor that is undoubtedly one of the things that the crew are most proud of, so just before they touch down on our London ground, we had a quick chat with BMM to find out more about the flourishing label and what to expect this Saturday night.
For anyone that may have not heard of BirdsMakingMachine yet, please could you briefly introduce yourself?
We are BirdsMakingMachine, a collective of artists formed by four friends and their mutual interest in music and art.
How did the label come about? Was there a specific reason as to why you started your own imprint?
Our friendship first led us to make music together before we developed a project that allowed us to share our similar musical visions. As some of us had already released music over the years and others had worked within the music scene, it felt like the most natural step to take.
What is it about BirdsMakingMachine that you believe defines the label and its overall ethos?
As an artist within the scene, it can be difficult to stay true to yourself and release material without finding yourself influenced by trends, established brands and record labels that do not always represent quality of music. We believe in music regardless of the name behind it, and that’s the reason why we decided to be anonymous as it allowed us to put the music first and above everything else.
It seems like the past couple of years you’ve really established yourself, with your first two 12” vinyl only releases selling out. What do you think was key to your growth as a label and how will you continue this success throughout 2014?
BMM is a family affair, a platform for music lovers. We started this as an experiment, to see if our ideas could work. We never expected such success and after the first and second release we were really surprised by everyone’s reaction. I guess the combination of original music, catchy designs and the mystery behind the name of the artists could perhaps explain it. I think distributing the music ourselves was also a good decision and key to the management of the label and its overall results. I guess success wouldn’t be the right way of looking at it, I would say we are more interested in keeping up the quality of music than meeting other people’s expectations.
Are there any releases in the pipeline?
We are releasing our next EP, BMM 004 on April 7th, followed by a series of remixes for other labels such as Finest Hour, Sol Asylum, Only 300 and Eklo.
So your piloting our third room on March 22nd, can you tell us a little about the artists on the bill – Binh, Pior, Rudolf and Manuk - and what we should expect?
To present the artists performing on the night let's follow the running order of our showcase...
Perfect for the warm-up, Manuk’s sets are known for its elegant selection of grooves and harmonies. He’s a very close friend of the project and has already released music on the legendary Canadian label, Archipel. Especially for fabric, Pior will perform the live act of the night where he’ll combine released and unreleased tracks from the label, setting the BMM vibe for the night. Our friend and guest for the night, Binh holds a residency for the infamous Clubdervisionaere, Berlin. He will bring his clever, swingy and avant-garde sound. The last slot will feature another member of the BMM collective, Rudolf. He will travel throughout the decades of house, breaks, minimal and deep techno. Having spent many years taking inspiration from the dance floors of London, especially fabric, he is renowned for his impeccable technique and hypnotic build ups and will no doubt close Room Three in pure style.
Overall you should expect loads of different music alongside the best vibes, all coming from a group of friends who are overwhelmed by the chance to showcase their label in such an amazing and respected club.
