Coming out of Essex, Gully B has been honing his sound system culture inspired aesthetic building up the rep of his party crew Pull Up with a series of infectious events and mixtapes.
The dancehall loving DJ is also a keen hunter of dubplates, getting special access to some of the scene’s best-loved artists as well as producing his own exclusive refixes. He’s taken the opportunity to showcase his approach to building a sets in this exclusive promo mix for his debut in EC1 where he’s slated to join Rum’n’Riddim. You can’t help but catch some of his infectious enthusiasm for sound system music from this mix, in tune with carnival culture.
The rising DJ has also put some words down to introduce this mix and explain how it is the perfect introduction to his sound...
Gully B: I wanted to really bring something special to this fabric mix. Throughout my teenage years, fabric was a home and melting pot of musical tastes that sparked my love for sound system culture.
So I called in some favours and locked down some exclusive dubplates from some of my favourite artists. My dubplate collection is my prized possessions and I think that these dubs, in addition to some of my favourite bootleg edits (as well as some of my own!) are what signify my style as a selector.
In this mix you can hear a variation of old and new tunes, that have proven to set a dance off! Starting the mix off with the classic 80s Dancehall style, Ninjaman recorded me a dubplate of his international hit
Murder Dem about 3 weeks before he was sentenced... I’m still in two minds about playing that out, but I try and focus on my love for the track above anything else. Some edits like the Missy Elliott flip and Usher edit, are actually vinyl rips of bootleg white labels that I’ve found in record shops.
Also, Doktor has exclusively given myself and fabric the first play of his forthcoming single with female Dancehall icon SPICE, with their track
Down For Me, as well as a dubplate of his latest single
Freak Inna You.
Massive thank you to Top Cat, Charly Black, Shenseea, Big Zeeks, Stylo G, Konshens, K More, Krystal Khayne, Freezy and Jamakabi for the Gully B dubplates included in this mix! Hopefully this provides the perfect pre-party soundtrack before my debut set at fabric!
