Introduce Yourself: A Short History of the Med School label
Given our close approximation to the work of the Med School label, who are soon to be launching their brand new Medical Mix in Room Three on 26th November, we thought we’d learn you your history and give you a timeline like run down of how the label came to be... Yes, this will be on the exam at the end of term.
2006:
* Med School was established in August 2006 as the experimental sister label to Hospital Records with a focus on D+B but without limitation in terms of tempo or style.
* At this stage no one really knew how Med School would do, and the idea, spearheaded by Tony (London Elektricity), became a reality with the first ever release MEDIC1 by S.P.Y – ‘Black Flag’/’Double Dragon’ which was released on 18th September 2006.
2007:
* With three releases already under their belt, Med School continue the slew of strong releases with MEDIC4 which showcased the skills of one Jeroen Snik, aka Icicle, with ‘So Close’/’Numbers’.
*Label manager Ash Howard takes over the day to day running of the label full time.
2008:
* In January 2008 Med School branched out into events, with the first ever fabric show as part of Hospitality on 4th January with guests 4Hero, Klute, Flight, Fracture + Neptune and Martsman. This was followed up by the first ever standalone Med School event at Plastic People in June 2008.
* Med School upped the ante with the innovatively entitled New Blood EP from a collection of hot new producers.
* MEDIC9 saw talented duo Fracture + Neptune step up with ‘Time Will Tell’/’Sky Song’.
2009:
* Med School made its first exclusive signing with Bop – the minimalist Microfunk producer from St Petersburg, Russia.
* The first ever artist album, Clear Your Mind, was released later this year by Bop and landed at no.32 in the Official UK Top 40 Dance Album Chart on the week of release.
* The Bop remix competition was launched to great success and was won by Thinnen whose remix was released as part of Bop’s Remix Your Mind EP the following year.
2010:
* Unquote, also from the St Petersburg region of Russia, joined the Med School camp delivering his heartfelt single ‘Hide Your Tears Because We Are In Heaven’.
* Following on from the success of the New Blood EP, Med School released its first ever compilation album, New Blood 010, which has gone to become a much-loved series.
* 2010 also saw Joe Syntax sign exclusively to the label following his appearance on the New Blood 010 compilation.
2011:
* Med School celebrates its 5th birthday.
* New Blood 011 continued the series’ success, showcasing many talented new producers including Lung.
* Following his appearance on New Blood, Cardiff based D+B/dubstep producer Lung signed exclusively to Med School.
* Artist albums come in thick and fast with Bop releasing his second album The Amazing Adventures of One Curious Pixel in May and Unquote releasing his debut album, Reverberation Box, in October.
2012:
* The third New Blood style compilation is released under the guise of Blood Pressure.
* Aussie producer Royalston seals the deal and signed exclusively to Med School after the success of his 2011 Cerulean Blue EP.
* With six years of releases under its belt, Medical Mix is released in November bringing together the Med School back catalogue with some previously unreleased VIPs and remixes.
Catch the launch of Medical Mix in Room Three on the 26th October with Joe Syntax, Synkro, Stray, Villem and Anile.
