For Monki, right now is an incredibly fruitful time. Plucked out of the Rinse office to cover and empty slot she’s since gone on to host the show regularly displaying her incredulously upfront selection and mixing skills. Seemingly involved in a bundle of projects she’s also playing here twice in the next 4 weeks, once this Friday and then again on the 1st April when FWD>> & Rinse decend to takeover our entire venue, so we caught up with her, asked her a few probing questions and asked her to put together a mini mix for our ever expanding blogspace. Download: Monki – FABRICLIVE Mini Mix (Tracklist after the jump) As fresh talent joining the Rinse roster last year, what was it like beating competition and getting a slot? It was a strange one really and a bit out of the blue! A slot became available and for a couple of weeks they didn't have anyone to fill it, I kind of got thrown into the studio from the office to cover the empty slot and after 4 weeks of covering I was asked if I wanted to make it an ongoing thing. It was mad, from going to playing in my bedroom and a few radio shows here and there to Rinse, where people are locking in from all over the world, yes, I love doing my show. You’re also involved in behind-the-scenes work at Rinse, can you tell us more? There's a small team of us that run the station and label, I'm very happy to be a part of that. Everyone chips in everywhere doing whatever needs to be done, I'm lucky in that my Mon-Fri job is still so music based. Enjoying work makes getting out of bed a lot easier, even though I'm terrible in the morning! Apart from working on your show, what else are you up to at the moment? Last year was crazy I was working on a lot of projects from radio to TV stuff, apart from concentrating on my show, I'll be playing out a lot more. I'd like to get involved in some sort of other project this year, I'm not sure what yet... I need a good brainstorm. Playing a variety of different types of bass music - can you reveal what your musical guilty pleasure is? Recently all the music I'm downloading are just promos or for sets, so I'm probably a bit behind on other bits but I listen to stuff like The Foals, Mount Kimble, Sleigh Bells, James Vincent.. I don't know any really embarrassing music I listen to. When I was 6 I use to love that ‘Witch Doctor’ cover by that weird Danish group called the Cartoons… Christ, that was such a bad song! What kind of vibes will you bringing to fabric when FWD>> and Rinse take over on April 1st? I play a lot of stuff, just what I'm feeling at the time. Recently I've been playing a lot of crazy bass driven French stuff. The vibe at FWD>> is always live, you will just have to come and witness it for yourself! Your blog features many random photos of things you’ve seen – what are your favourite/funniest 5 photos from the last 9 months? 1. Serato 7... I went to the future and bought this back. 2. Picture or a cashmachine in the East End, when you put in your card it offers you two language options: English? or Cockney? …No joke, I suggest cockney, it's a learning curve. 3. 106.8FM Rinse poster campaign 4. My mate was in Hamburg and took this one : ) You’ve mentioned before that getting a show on Rinse had always been one of your goals, now you’ve accomplished this, what’s next on your list? This year is for DJing, I just want to play as many quality nights as humanly possible, so I'm excited to be playing fabric. I'm going to keep working on my show; the feedback has been great so far, so thank you to everyone that's locked in! There is a lot to accomplish, there's a few goals that have been ticked this year but I need to add to my list!
