Audio: MistaJam's Jam Packed FABRICLIVE Mix

MistaJam’s been a larger than life personality for years now, though he’s been the fast disappearing man for the last couple. He’s got an overwhelming degree of enthusiasm about him and his BBC Radio One and 1xtra radio shows have benefitted a thousand times over from that vibrancy in his personality and endless his passion for music. The last time we spoke to him, back in March, we discussed his blossoming hankering for dubstep and his Speakerbox club night but with a ‘Jam Packed’ (you see what we did there) lineup slated for the Friday night of our birthday weekend in Room Two we wanted to check in and find out exactly where he’s at right now. We caught up with him between stops on Snoop Dogg’s UK tour, a massive deal for him and his profile, to discuss the him curating the room and then he went and dropped us a promotional mix – an act that astounded us given how hectic and busy his schedule over these past few weeks was. Download: MistaJam – Jam Packed FABRICLIVE Promo Mix What’s life been like for MistaJam since we last caught up with you? Very busy! Literally haven't stopped since we last spoke in March. It's all good busy though rather than the kind of busy that you wish you didn't have to be. Just came off a UK arena tour supporting Snoop Dogg, did a load of festivals and also managed to get a 60% increase on listenership for my radio shows year on year... which was nice!! In March, you tipped us off about a few artists we should be keeping an ear out for. These included, R1 Ryders, Two Inch Punch, Mensah and Flux Pavilion. Who’s on your radar now? Any tracks you’re itching to play out at the moment? We're in a great time for British Underground (with a capital U) music right now. The major players are paying attention to what's going on and jumping on what's hot which, as this time round we've retained control, can only be a good thing. Artists wise, there's literally too many to list and my usual interview stock cop out line is 'anyone I play on my show' but I have to mention Sam Frank as he's is amazing and my Jam Hot this week. Apart from him, keep an eye on my tracklistings and an ear on my show cause if I think they deserve to be on your radar, I'll be playing them. When you’re not on the radio yourself, are there any radio shows you regularly listen to? I love radio as a medium so I'm always listening to someone so there's actually a long list! I'm still a fan of the people I grew up listening to who are now my radio peers like Westwood, Zane Lowe, Fabio and Grooverider, Annie Nightingale & Trevor Nelson. The specialist team at 1Xtra and Radio 1 are really special, especially Bailey, Annie Mac, DJ Q, Benji B, Robbo Ranx and Rob Da Bank. I've regularly got Rinse on my tune in radio app in the car and also really rate the specialist team over at Kiss too like Logan, Hatcha and Hype. Sometimes on the way home from gigs though, I have been known to listen to a bit of Planet Rock or Nick Margerrisson on LBC too. Gotta have the variety! You’re joining us in celebration of our 12th birthday here at fabric on the 21st, what can we be expecting from your ‘Jam Packed’ takeover in Room Two? Carnage! As Dub Police are controlling Room One, I've specifically gone for a lineup that will compliment whattagwan and quite selfishly, have put together a lineup of people I've really wanted to play alongside but haven't had the chance to yet. Jam Packed is a name specific for any collabs I do with you good people at fabric and I'm hoping we'll get to use it a few times over the course of 2012! I'll be playing an anything but dubstep set just to mix it up but with dubstep making up a large part of my standard sets these days, I'm putting in the prep work. However the only record I know I'll definitely be dropping is The Good Men's ‘Give It Up’ which was the first record I played in fabric back in 2007 when Sinden and Switch booked me for their Get Familiar night! Back when I could barely fit in the DJ booth! Tell us about the mix you’ve put together for us and the track selection in particular... I stood in front of my decks in my studio and threw some tracks against the wall. The mix is what stuck. It's also my audition piece to get a FABRICLIVE mix in the not too distant future *cough cough hint hint* Catch MistaJam a week on Friday in Room Two.
